![]() A Massive jump for TV Adverts!May 30, 2008 on 3:11 pm by Dirk | In News | 1 CommentAs you may (or may not have seen) Channel 4 last night made history as it featured the UK’s first live Television advert during Come Dine With Me. The advert featured a number of sky divers spelling out Honda as they plummeted from 12,000 metres (40,000ft). The advert (below) lasted a couple of minutes, cost around £500,000, and attracted around 2.2million viewers. Due to the lower production costs as there are no post production proceedures go through, and the added attraction for the viewer that something could go wrong, (really why else are you watching!?) could this be the start of a new trend in the advertising world? MyWeb ![]() Indiana Jones and the Search for the Useless Tat!May 23, 2008 on 11:50 am by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postYep, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull has only just been released in cinemas and already the flow of questionable licensed products has begun. First up is the Crystal Skull Adventure Projector. This advises you to “Watch as the Crystal Skull projects amazing images from its glowing eye. Professor Jones will be your tour guide as you visit exciting archaeological discoveries of the world and famous scenes from the Indiana Jones movies.”. From the price of the item I’m guessing it is less crystal, more clear plastic, and may well need an archaeological expedition to rediscover it after a couple of weeks (though hopefully without the Russians trying to get there first). Slated for an early June release is the upcoming LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures. If this is even half as much fun as the Star Wars games I might have to go out and get this. From the trailer (below) things are looking promising. A word of warning however, obtain all this merchandise, and the rest of the tidal wave that is sure to follow and you could end up like this Indy superfan . Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with that, but your mum/significant other is probably not going to be best please by the amount of clutter taking over the house. Myself, I just hope the movie lives up to my memories of the original three! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() iPhone 2.0 set for world domination?May 22, 2008 on 11:20 am by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postInside sources have been quoted as stating that the 3g iPhone is going to be officially announced on June 9th, and will be available immediately after the announcement and not at year end as previously thought. Looking at the map showing where the iPhone will be available I can’t help but be reminded of the old map showing the British Empire at it’s peak, here they are side by side, iPhone map top (from Wired Gadget Lab Blog), and the British Empire below:
With the 3g functionality, unfathomably left out of the original, available in the 2.0 model Apple look set to continue their assault on the mobile phone world, again staking a claim for one of the most sought after and anticipated gadgets of the year. On a slightly more cynical note although I say the omission of 3g in the original iPohne was unfathomable I can’t help feel this was merely a marketing ploy by Apple. Leaving out 3g capability from the original would seem to indicate that although Apple were probably confident of the iPhones impressive entry to this new market leaving out this capability reduced the overall cost of production, and therefore the risk of the unit. Of course there is also the added bonus that the new 2.0 model has very definite and quantifiable feature improvements over its predecessor and thus the folks who got one of the original iPhones, as last years ’must have’ gadget, will be left with no choice but to upgrade to the new model. MyWeb ![]() Population explosion at Gadgets Towers!May 16, 2008 on 4:19 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postThat’s right, the widespread reports of a population explosion here at Gadgets Towers have not been erroneous in the least. Almost overnight our current population has nearly doubled from four to seven. With a running total of nine stick insects hatched from our 11 eggs we have unfortunately had to mourn the passing of two individuals, which has left us with seven With the ‘deadline’ of 20th May fast approaching it appears our inhabitation level may have peaked. Ivy is still the food of choice amongst the population, and it’s always a fun way to start the day by seeing how long it takes us to spot them all. They aren’t awfully active during the day, and there has been dissent from some corners that they are boring, thankfully their chosen ‘Weekend Carer’ was quick to rally in their defence. We are still waiting for them to start their first shedding phase as the anticipation slowly builds towards this momentous event. Further updates here as it happens! Our World Alive Insect Kits are available to purchase here. StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Gadgets for better festival survivalMay 14, 2008 on 1:41 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postSummer is rapidly approaching, and that means it’s time, for me at least, to start thinking about spending a few weekends in various fields at the festivals. Now I realise that camping in a field for three days with shared chemical toilets, showers, and the threat of torrential rain at any given moment might not appeal, but thankfully there are many gadgets available to make your stay much more palatable. I will deal first with the basics, the items I would consider survival ‘essentials’ for a festival. My first rule is to try and travel as light as possible at these events, humping huge and heavy loads of kit to and from the car is not fun. As far as stuff goes I take a tent (One man), sleeping bag, rollmat, rucksack with changes of clothes in, and a camping chair. Food and drink is normally transported on a second journey. Tents come in a large range from those like mine that consist of a bit of canvas two poles and some pegs, to those that are basically like a three bedroom semi detached house that require planning permission before erecting. Don’t take a tent that’s any bigger or complex than you need, and if putting tents up isn’t your forte there are a range of quick pitch tents to make life easier for you, and they are generally also a lot easier and quicker to get packed up as well! (as demonstrated in the video below) It is debateable as to just how effective these would be in adverse weather, but in a field in Britain in the height of summer, that shouldn’t be a problem. Sleeping bags, in my opinion, are fairly much of a muchness, so unless you really suffer from the cold, for the purposes of a summer festival your basic budget job should be fine. A roll mat, as well as making the ground slightly more comfortable, will also help keep you a little warmer by keeping you off the ground. If you have a larger budget however you may prefer something a bit more novel such as the SELK’BAG, a sleeping bag you wear. Camping chairs can be picked up for about £5 and as well as giving you somewhere comfy to sit, most also incorporate a drink holder. Should you want even more there is a Rocking Camping Chair, or the really lazy could try the Lazy Days Hammock. These are what I would consider the more ‘essential’ items, and I’ll have a look at some of the more ‘optional’ gadgets out there shortly. MyWeb ![]() A Gadget for the lazy Poker PlayerMay 9, 2008 on 12:59 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postPoker, a serious game, and an ideal activity for the “Lads night in”. We take things fairly seriously a the bi-weekly game that I attend on a regular basis. We have a fold-up table-top, an aluminium case of Poker Chips, and insist on using a new deck of cards for every game. In fact, the only thing we really need for our poker nights is to have an official dealer. Unfortunately for the small stakes we play for paying someone to deal for us for 4 or 5 hours isn’t really a feasible option. Enter the iDealer. MyWeb ![]() Looking forward to the long weekend?May 2, 2008 on 1:31 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postA Bank Holiday can only mean rain, traffic jams and long journeys ending up with arguments! Or at least that’s the way a lot of journeys tend to go at these times. Whether it be because of the extra 6 hours added to your journey due to a jam, getting lost due to ignoring the navigator, poor navigation, or just the vehicle you are in breaking down, these are treacherous times. Thankfully the world of Gadgets and Gizmos has a lot of possible solutions available to ease the tension. A Nintendo DS for the kids, a Satnav to assure that navigational issues are not a problem, a portable DVD player to keep the passengers occupied, or just an MP3 player to listen to while they snooze. However should you not be able to obtain some or all of these items there are, believe it or not, slightly less technological but equally effective solutions! Rather than a portable games system, why not just fun games you can play in the car, a few suggestions can be found here on the AA’s website, but a quick search will unearth a few more suggestions as well. If you don’t have a trusty TomTom to hand, then try using one of the online route planners provided by the likes of the RAC, and the AA. I would recommend the driver looking over these instructions and maybe rewriting them into a format that both they and the navigator will be easily able to understand. Whatever your plans for the weekend I hope it’s sunny and as relaxing as possible for you! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb |
