Dirks Birthday!

June 30, 2009 on 12:17 pm by Clare | In What are we doing? | 3 Comments

Hi Guys

Hope everyone had a good weekend? The weather was glorious on Saturday…well until it poured down however by then I’d already done my sunbathing so I didn’t care :) Unlike Dirk who had a BBQ which soon turned into an indoor grill dinner…. he he.

So far this week in Gadgets Tower we’ve been having fun promoting our fantastic summer sale, what with the weather getting better everyday Summer finally feels like its here! To add to the excitement it is also a great day in the office as it’s Dirk’s birthday… YAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIRK!

As Dirk is a true computer virtual boff I thought it would be more appropriate to give Dirk the virtual cake he deserves for this special occasion! I “virtually” made it myself and hope he enjoys the added personal touch :)

Lets hope Dirk has a good day! Until Friday everyone…..xx

The Week Draws To A Close….

June 26, 2009 on 3:44 pm by Clare | In What are we doing? | 3 Comments

Its Friday…

So that means a quick round up of whats been going on around Gadgets towers this week.

It was quiet in the office at the start of the week with Mandy away, and I was still recovering from my busy weekend. Tuesday everything was back to normal and so it was full steam ahead. Dirk was busy creating new pages for the site, Mandy was sifting through all the new products and samples while I was busy sorting out our summer sale. The sale is now live on the site so check it out and grab yourself a bargain!

Wednesday came, and following the events of my weekend I went to see “The Hangover“. This movie was great and very funny, I would recommend anyone who fancies having their sides split with laughter going to see it. The basic plot, for those who are not familiar, is a group of friends have a bachelor party in Vegas. They wake up in the morning very hungover and no one can remember the previous nights antics. Not to mention they also find to their horror they have lost the groom! Predictably the movie then follows them on a mission to find the missing groom and try to get him to the wedding.

Yesterday I was excited at the news that apparently some salads from supermarket contain more fat than a Big Mac. As I love Big Mac’s surely I can now ditch the salads and have a new Mc Donald’s diet and it will work a treat? It leaves me thinking whether healthy eaters like myself will ever have the luxury of actually having the “OK” to eat something other than a cardboard Weetabix for breakfast and a lettuce leaf for lunch?

And so Finally Friday is upon us! We were all a bit shocked this morning upon hearing the unexpected news about Michael Jackson, however our spirits have been lifted as we’ve had all his greatest hits blasting out of the stereo all day courtesy of the local radio station allowing us to remember all the fantastic music he left us with.

Everyone’s looking forward to the weekend, even though I personally have nothing planned yet.. Looking at the weather it’s a good job I haven’t as it’s rain and gloom. Ahh poor campers at Glastonbury. Sorry guys…hope you packed your wellies as this looks like its going to be one wet weekend!

I will leave you to enjoy your weekend…..see you Tuesday!!

xx

Another wet weekend in Wales

June 25, 2009 on 3:53 pm by Mandy | In What are we doing? | 1 Comment

I was going to give you a full review of the Muvi Camcorder today however due to poor weather conditions at the weekend I’m unable to. I was hoping to get some great footage scrambling over the Gribin Ridge and descending via the Devils Kitchen (also known as Twll Du) but yet again we were subjected to some of the worst weather Wales has to offer. Rain, rain and yes you guessed it more rain, visibility was so awful that I hardly got to use my normal camera. Although we were very cold and extremely wet the weather didn’t dampen our spirits and we all still had an awesome day on the mountain even if we didn’t get any footage.

One disadvantage to the camcorder is that it isn’t waterproof, it comes with a great little weather proof case however this wouldn’t have protected it from the torrential rain we experienced. Had it of been waterproof I would have liked to use it when we went gorge walking (also know as canyoning). It’s the first time I’ve been gorge walking and I must say I loved it, messing about in the water, abseiling and not to mention a 30ft jump into a plunge pool, what’s not to love!?! Now that all seems like a distant memory as I sit here at my desk with a pile of samples to my right and new products to my left. Although having just seen the Wind up Walkie Talkies I’m already planning my next trip, I mean somebody got to test them out properly haven’t they?

Lest We Forget….

June 24, 2009 on 9:31 am by Dirk | In News, What we are liking | 1 Comment

It wasn’t until I saw the video below that I realised that with the constant influx of smaller and smaller gadgets onto the market there is one thing that hasn’t really changed in as long as I can remember. In fact it remains just as big and bulky as it was in 1946 when it was introduced here in the UK. I am of course talking about the humble BS 1363 plug.

It seems daft that in an age where laptops such as the Mac Book Air can fit inside an envelope, we are still lugging around power cables that could well be used somewhat like a medieval flail, doing a fair amount of damage with it’s 3 prongs.

When you think about it maybe it’s not that far fetched and ridiculous an idea that this particular item hasn’t evolved over the years. After all portable gadgets come with rechargeable batteries, and although if you are going to use them on the go for a prolonged period you may take the power adaptor with you, generally the means for charging these tiny portable gadgets is left at home. Likewise with any home bound gadgets the plugs and their offending wires are hidden away behind units so as not to make the place look untidy.

This concept takes the traditional 3-pin plug and minimises it via a clever folding mechanism, to make it just as portable as the teeny tiny gadgets it powers. I don’t know about anyone else, but on a trip away I could certainly do with some of these replacing the myriad mess of chargers I normally have to take! If you keep watching till the end there is also a suggested alternative to the space hungry multi point adaptors.

Clare Goes To Birghton

June 23, 2009 on 3:21 pm by Clare | In What are we doing? | 1 Comment

Hi Everyone!

Welcome back to the working week.

As you all know this weekend Clare went to Brighton. It was my friends birthday and she had a great idea to go to the beach and have a good night out on the town. Equipped with my cowgirl outfit ready for my night out I did of course bring my necessary Gadgets to help me through the weekend.

Once we got there we were all starving, and so had some traditional fish and chips on the beach…. Bad idea!! We were attacked by evil Seagulls and forced to hide away in the safety of a shelter. So for all of those of you who go this summer please beware there are some predators lurking.

After the obvious gadgets like travel speakers for the iPod and travel pillows my favourite gadget which all the girls also loved was the Ice shot moulds. After asking the hotel nicely they froze them for us and so when they had been in the freezer for a couple of hours (enough time for us girls to go exploring the beach whilst hiding from what seemed to be a remake of the film “The Birds”) they were ready. All that was left to do was to simply get stuck in!

After a great night on the town which I of course will spare you the details! Me and the girls (in all our early evening glory in the photo below) hung up our cowgirl hats and retreated home. Waking up Monday morning I was a bit worse for wear, but never-the-less I look forward to working towards the next weekend!

So have a good week and I’ll see you Friday :) xx

It’s The Happiest Day Of The Year!

June 19, 2009 on 1:17 pm by Clare | In What we are liking | 3 Comments

Afternoon everyone!

Fun Friday has arrived and the weather forecast looks promising for the weekend!

My weekend will be spent in Brighton as a cowgirl for a friends birthday so if I can manage to take a few decent pics I’ll be sure to fill you in next week!

As for this week Monday was still quite quiet what with Dirk being away, however we did still manage to have some fun whilst taking the last bit of pleasure from having our choice of radio station.

Tuesday came and went pretty quickly as everyone caught up on some work.

Wednesday we all found much amusement in discussing the story of the girl who went in to have her faced tattooed with three small stars to realise the tattooist had drawn 56 stars all over her face! Being a lover of tattoos and having six myself I can only imagine that girl is clearly not completely correct when she says she “fell asleep”. I know from experience that having a tattoo, especially on your face, is hardly the same as being rocked in a cradle with a lullaby!!

Thursday was clearly everyone’s favourite day this week. As I’ve mentioned before my new favourite gadget, the Pizza Pro, arrived last week and today was the day we decided to test it out. I was equipped with my spinach and feta cheese pizza whilst Dirk and Mandy had their American Hot. If you’re wondering why three pizzas and not just one this is simple, it’s because we needed to test out the cutting ability on different toppings (Yeah right!)

The Pizza Pro worked perfectly and easily cut through all the pizzas and various toppings with ease! It also caused lots of interest in the canteen as everyone pondered over the unique shape. In true Gadgets style we devoured our pizzas and happily rolled back to work!

Surely enough Friday is here again and I am still stuffed from yesterdays pizza! Today I choose to leave you on a good note. Coincidently I will bring to your attention that today is officially the happiest day of the year according to a scientific study. Boffin Dr Cliff Arnal has brainstormed an equation to work out using nature and social interaction to find the happy day.

According to the research this has been worked out using the equation O + (N xS) + Cpm/T + He.

O stands for being outdoors and outdoor activity, N is connection with nature, which is in full bloom now, S is socialisation with neighbours and friends, Cpm stands for childhood positive memories, T is the mean temperature which is now usually warm, and He is holiday expected.

Personally any Friday is a particularly great day for me. So what ever you do today stay happy!

See you next week!

xx

Robots In Disguise Return To The Big Screen

June 19, 2009 on 11:20 am by Dirk | In What are we doing? | 1 Comment

Last night I decided that as I hadn’t been to the cinema in a while I would fork out the exorbitant £8.20 to go and see the midnight showing of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. I hadn’t actually read or heard any reviews of this before I went to see it, so didn’t quite know what to expect, suffice to say I was not disappointed, not only was this action packed from start to finish, it also packed in a lot more laughs than I expected, and of course as well as the very lovely Megan Fox there is also the very welcome Isabel Lucas, whose character, it was agreed by myself and a friend, would have made a much better T-X than was actually portrayed in T3: Rise Of The Machines.

Some of the reviews for ROTF at first glance at least haven’t been complimentary, such as the one featured in Empire Magazine. I mean, only 3 stars..? Reading through the review though and I can actually agree with a pretty mush all that they say, the only disagreement I have being regarding the length of the film. I certainly recommend it for a watch, and I’ve included the trailer above to whet your appetite.

And if you’re feeling particularly ‘up for it’ why not go along to see it in one of our great Flashing Transformer T-Shirts?

Back and Burned

June 17, 2009 on 4:20 pm by Dirk | In What are we doing? | 2 Comments

Well, as Clare alluded to in her blog yesterday I am indeed back from my week ’sitting in a field’ as I believe Mandy so eloquently stated in her post last week. I was in fact up at Donnington Park for the Download Festival enjoying some of the best Rock, Metal, and Alternative bands the world currently has to offer.

As you can see from the photo’s above it was a lovely weekend weather-wise, and packed full of great people, I believe the capacity had actually been expanded this year making it seem even more packed than usual!

Of course Gadgets played some part in the weekends festivities, being outside and away from any power points and of course not wanting to queue for ridiculous amounts of time to recharge our various phones, some of my friends had rechargeable power packs like the i3G for their iPhones. There were also vendors selling the Cardboard Portaloos and She Wee’s I spoke about in my blog post last year. Still, I am now back at Gadgets Towers and trying to catch up with all the great new Gadgets we’ve had arrive while I’ve been away!

What Would You Do?

June 16, 2009 on 4:09 pm by Clare | In What are we doing? | 4 Comments

Hi everyone

It’s Tuesday and even though the week has only just begun the gadgets team are in high spirits. Dirk is back and so the team is back to full strength.

Talking of high spirits I noticed on the front page today about Lotto winner Brian Caswell. This lucky Brit has just won the Euro Lotto of £25 Million! This got the gadgets team fantasising on what we would do if we had won the lottery.

Even though Mandy and Dirk clearly needed brain storming time, my money was already spent….

After travelling around the world to all the 5* hotels, I would eventually settle down. Nothing fancy, just a mansion in Miami on the beach. David Beckham would be paid to be my husband and Bruce Willis would be my gardener! Now I know what you’re thinking it’s not a lot, but a girl needs the simple necessities in life!! As for travelling around to visit my neighbours, Mr and Mrs Pitt, a driver would be needed! I can’t seem to pass my driving test after 7 attempts so a chauffeur in a BMW convertible would have to do until I bribed an instructor to pass me.

After shelling out for surgery to ensure I never got old, I would buy a large number of Siamese cats and build an outhouse by my pool so we could all have enough space to play!

As for Dirk, who clearly has thought about this before has a well planned list. He sensibly would pay off his mortgage and decorate what would be his penthouse apartment bachelor pad somewhere around Canary Wharf? I did have to ask why London of all places in the world, to which he replied “London is the greatest city in the world!” (er… hope that pad has good central heating Dirk!)

To get around an Aston Martin was on his shopping list as well as a DeLorean. Finally he was on my level and chose to globe trot which would have to be undertaken on the new Virgin Galactic. (I too would be on the same flight.. you’d find me in the sauna!) Then retreat to his pub where strangely there is an endless supply of free beer!

He also brought up a very good plan to pay Channel 4 to NEVER make another series of Big Brother ever again…. I think the nation should come together and donate if the Lotto option doesn’t pan out!!

Mandy on the other hand did have a little trouble as there was so much to chose from. She eventually decided on doing the world trip as it is a must do when you’re rich. Unlike most though she would use this opportunity to go trekking and climb all the different mountains like Everest, K2, etc. After all that exploring she would relax at Richard Branson’s private Island with a small group of friends, we then worked it out to be a quarter of a million for 5 nights! (I can see £25 million may not be enough for the gadgets team?) She would then retreat to her luxury villa in the Alps (inspired by her latest hol) where she could mountain bike in summer and ski in winter.

May I also add she is the only one who would still work, as a volunteer somewhere, which is nice but something tells me I’ll be too busy on my beach and Dirk in his pub!

Anyway, enjoy your imaginary lotto win and see you Friday!

Loads of new gadgets arriving this week

June 15, 2009 on 4:45 pm by Mandy | In News, Reviews | 4 Comments

Afternoon everyone,

Travel Slanket modelled by MandyAnd so here we are again, I don’t know about you but my weekend seems to go quicker and quicker each week! I was hoping to give you a review of the Muvi Camcorder today however after a day out with the girls on Saturday I wasn’t feeling my best yesterday and although my bike has been fixed I’ve noticed it now has a puncture, grr. On the plus side this week is a short one for me as I’ve got a long weekend in Wales coming up, should be the ideal place to test out the camera.

This week we’ve got loads of new products appearing on the website, here’s a little snippet of what you can expect to see. As Clare mentioned on Friday we have the new Travel Slanket, it’s like the original version just slightly smaller and comes in a handy little travel bag. Being 5′ nothing I found the original Slanket rather on the big side so this is the idea size for me even when I’m not travelling.

Travel SlanketAs the sound asleep pillow has been a big hit with you guys you’ll be pleased to know we will be getting the memory foam version. It works exactly like the hollowfibre version however it moulds to your bodies shape and natural contours.

Again adding to an existing but very popular range we’ll be getting the new Pink Sun Jar, Clare was very excited when she first saw this product so I’m sure she’ll tell you more about it when they are in. I could keep going as there are loads more products however you’ll need to visit the “what’s new” section on the site later in the week.

The post has just arrived on my desk and with it lots of samples, yay! So that my cue to exit.

Have a good week.
