![]() Mega MondayNovember 30, 2009 on 5:08 pm by Mandy | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postI hope you all had a good weekend! I spent the weekend in Selsey on the West Sussex coast. I ate loads, had a nice relaxing long walk by the beach and even watch two different sets of Christmas lights being switched on. I must say the fireworks that followed the switch on at Chichester were amazing! Even though there was torrential rain throughout and I got soaked, I didn’t let it dampen my mood and was still full of the Christmas beer, err I mean cheer! Sitting here now I’m thinking it was a good job I had relaxing one as today has been manic!! With Dirk being off Friday and today it’s my turn to be left holding the fort. Today is certainly living up to the name of Mega Monday, the orders have been flooding in and the phones have been ringing off the hook. It leaves me wondering if Dirk secretly knew about Mega Monday when he booked his time off, hmm! I suppose I better get back to work but before I do I just wanted to tell you about this week’s new cart promo. Buy anything this week and get this handy World Time Travel Clock for only £5.95. That’s a saving of £3!!
So what are you waiting for get shopping and join in, in making today Mega Monday. M x StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Top 5 Best SellersNovember 27, 2009 on 3:28 pm by Mandy | In What we are liking | Comment on this postAs Dirk mentioned I’ve been off most of this week with the horrible stomach that been doing the rounds. Personally I blame my brother and his family as I’m sure they infected me when I recently visited for my final fitting of my bridesmaid dress. As I’ve spent most of this week in bed and the rest of it catching up on work I can’t say I’ve come across anything of particular interest to write about so I thought I’d share with you our current 5 best sellers over the last week. If you visit the home page of our site you’ll find a list of our top 10 best sellers which is updated weekly according to our sales figures. Slipping to 5th place this week is the Slanket. Keep nice and cosy this winter with one of these snuggly Slankets. I bought one for my Nan last year and she wouldn’t be without it. Also now available the new Double Slanket for double the snuggle factor. A non-mover at 4th place is the Cozy Boots. Keep your feet toasty on these cold nights, just two minutes in a microwave, slip them on your feet and away you go. In 3nd place are the Origami Sticky notes, a great little stocking filler. Another non mover in 2nd place is the Key Finder. This handy little gadget has been in the top 10 for as long as I can remember. For months now it’s been helping hundreds of you find your keys. To see for yourself just check out some of our customer reviews on the product page. And finally a new entry at number 1, our top selling product this week is the Digital Photo Keychain. MyWeb ![]() That’s Just DaftNovember 24, 2009 on 4:37 pm by Dirk | In News | 1 CommentAnother weekend gone, and what a wash-out it was! Thankfully here at Gadgets Towers although it was wet and windy we were lucky enough to remain dry inside. Of course the build up to Christmas continues this week, as Mandy mentioned we have our decorations up, (although I still think November is too early!) an Christmas adverts and songs seem to be in pretty much full swing wherever you go! Of course this means we are nearly as busy as Santa and his elves here what with orders flying in, and new products still arriving every day! Unfortunately Mandy has been taken ill, so I’m holding the fort on my own somewhat at the moment. I will admit I felt a bit daunted this morning when I saw the mountain of tasks I had to do, but I took inspiration from this video. Now, Daft Punk aren’t normally the sort of thing I would listen to, but with the title of the song being “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” and the fact I really like this video, it seemed somewhat appropriate for me to turn to for inspiration! I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Mandy a swift recovery! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() November 20, 2009 on 5:01 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postAnother Friday is upon us here at Gadgets Towers, and we are all looking forward to the weekend ahead. I myself am journeying to a help a friend celebrate (or should that be commiserate?) getting another year older, and in the course of this we shall be cheering on the England Rugby team hoping for a vastly improved showing over what they were trying to pass off as a Rugby Union international last weekend! Hopefully since Rugby has already introduced video refs and other such Gadgets, the result won’t come down to something as contentious as the Football international between France and Ireland did earlier this week! For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, here is the video of ‘that’ goal. As a result Ireland have petitioned Fifa to have the game replayed, and Mr. Henry’s Wikipedia page was unfortunately edited, some may say ‘vandalised’ as someone failed to find a constructive way of venting their frustration, although I have to say I’ve never particularly liked him or his ‘va-va-voom’ so it did amuse me. As well as calling the spirit of fair play in the game into question it has also, once again, raised questions of whether video replays or other technology should be introduced, personally I can see the introduction of replay technology going the same way as Irelands request for a replay and Fifa deciding against both. Whatever your plans are for the weekend ahead, we all hope you have a good one, see you next week! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Flute HeroNovember 19, 2009 on 4:51 pm by Dirk | In What we are liking | 1 CommentEver since the first Guitar Hero game was released waaaaaayyyyyy back in 2005 debate has raged as to whether or not there is any benefit to playing rhythm games with regards to playing real musical instruments. There seem to be three main schools of thought on this as I see it, they are: 1) Those in the “YES” camp – These are the sort of individuals who are of the opinion that because they excel at Gran Turismo, Call Of Duty or, case in point, Guitar Hero, they would also be able to cope more than adequately in the corresponding real life scenario, be it power sliding a super car around a track, or shredding a serious solo from a six-string. Yes. These people are obviously deluded. 2) Those in the “NO” camp – Exactly the opposite to those in the yes camp, and usually made up of muscisians and people who have put a lot of time, effort, and practise into learning their chosen instrument(s). They leave you under no illusion that a knowing how to strum a silly little plastic peripheral does not come anywhere close to comparing with the rock god status that is obtained with being able to have a guitar screaming in a scintillating solo. Or, even for that matter being able to nail the riff from “Smoke On The Water” in about 5 minutes from scratch without any prior musical training. 3) The moderate camp – Those who think that rhythm games have their place, are a great way of getting a few friends together and enjoying ‘playing along’ to your favourite songs in a social setting. The possible musical gains being a better sense of rhythm, (they are called ‘rhythm games after all) and in the later games where singing has been included, a better sense of whether or not you can actually carry a tune as well as you think from your sessions of singing in the shower. Whilst I would class myself in the final group, aside from the vocal aspect, and maybe helping a beginner getting the hang of drumming, I would say that these games don’t really do much to help you musically. At least I thought that until I saw the video below. The girl in the video below wondered what would happen if she took her impressive flute playing ability and implemented it to try and play along with the lyrics to Rock Band songs. Ok, so you do need to be a pretty serious musician to pull this off to that sort of level, but I guess it is still another argument for those in the yes camp. MyWeb ![]() Christmas has arrivedNovember 17, 2009 on 3:39 pm by Mandy | In News | Comment on this postI’m pleased to announce Christmas has arrived at Gadgets Towers!! The tree finally went up last night along with all the other decorations. As usual there was a fair amount of groaning from some people (mainly Dirk) who feel it’s still too early, I say it’s never too early! I’ve had Xmas songs playing in the car for ages, absolutely everyone I know has been subjected to my Sleeps to Xmas app on my iPhone (only 38) and if I had my way the decorations would have gone up on the 1st Nov!!
Along with the office the website has also been given a festive feel, take a look if you haven’t already. Whilst there don’t forget to look at our dedicated Christmas present and Stocking filler categories. With a wide range of gifts I’m sure you’ll find something for all the family. MyWeb ![]() Testing out new productsNovember 13, 2009 on 5:08 pm by Mandy | In News, What are we doing? | 1 CommentAfternoon everyone, As usual, yesterday we received our delivery of new products from the warehouse. We’ve had great fun testing them out so I thought I’d show you a few photo’s of them in use. Firstly we have Dirk modelling the new iHat.
Next we have me trying out the Earmuff Headphones. They were very cozy and sounded fantastic!
Lastly me again keeping my feet warm with the USB Foot warmers.
Thats it from me this week. Hope you all have a great weekend! M x StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() SimplicITy, Or Over Simplified For The Sake Of It?November 12, 2009 on 5:10 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postYou will have probably seen in the news about simplicITy, the new computer which is being aimed at the over 60s. Understandably there a portion of this target demographic who feel somewhat patronised by this approach, after all just because someone is over 60 doesn’t mean they lose the ability to learn to use new technology. Of course there are those over 60 who will find this computer and operating system to be just what they need, giving them an environment where they feel safe, but there are also the ‘Silver Surfers’ who have been around as long as the internet and aren’t going anywhere.
Now at £435.99 for the cheaper model (complete with wireless mouse, keyboard, monitor, and speakers) this seems a little on the expensive side for something so, using their own terminology, simple. Only a Hard disk drive, no USB or CD/DVD drives (at least as far as I can tell), what you get for your money seems a little thin on the ground. In fact seeing as the owner will need to set up their own Broadband connection anyway, which can be a frustrating exercise at the best of times, surely it would be easier, and of more use in the long run to purchase a standard computer. Sure it may mean a little work from friends or relatives, but a similar result can be reached with a standard Windows computer, some setting up of programs such as Outlook and Internet Explorer, and a quick organising of the desktop so that only shortcuts that the user actually needs are visible rather than the myriad arrangement of them that are always there when any new computer is turned on for the first time. On the other hand, anything that opens up more people to the information and resources available on the internet can only be a good thing one would imagine. Viva la revolution! MyWeb ![]() Getting old and GranniesNovember 10, 2009 on 5:25 pm by Mandy | In News, What we are liking | 1 CommentOver the last few weeks I’ve been complaining bitterly about my car. It’s fair to say we’ve had our ups and downs over the years, normally resulting in me paying out hundreds of pounds. This newest problem however is more annoying than costly (I think). For some unknown reason the radio randomly defaults to Radio Two and loses all my preset stations. It’s been quite a pain, I’m not normally a Radio Two kinda girl, isn’t Radio Two for old people? I mean my dad listens to Radio Two and sings Wogan’s praises but I just didn’t get it. Usually I’d prefer a bit of Kiss 100 to get me going in the morning with Radio One’s Scott Mills in the afternoon to see me home however the last few times it’s happened I couldn’t be bothered to fight with the radio. Instead I’ve found myself listening, in particular to the Chris Evans drive time show. I must admit I think I might be starting to enjoy it. I’ve noticed that every now and again I’m actually turning over to the show and staying tuned, more recently I’ve caught myself saying “I was listening to the radio two last night and there was a really interesting bit about….blah, blah, blah.” OMG does this mean I’m getting old!?! Anyway you may wonder why I’m telling you all this, well last week I was listening to Radio Two because my car defaulted to it and there was a really interesting piece about a company called Grannies Inc. If like me you like your beanie hats (last count I have about 15, ranging from bright furry blue to shocking pink) then you’ll love this site. You can design your own beanie or baggie, it’s very simple but that means it’s extremely easy to use. Not only can you design the colour and pattern but you can also decide whether you have a bobble or flaps with tassels. Once you’ve finished your master piece the order is sent to a granny (hence the name) who will hand knit it for you. Why grannies, because who knows more about knitting than grannies? No-one, that’s who!
So if you’re looking for a truly unique gift this Christmas or just a fab new addition to your collection then head over to Grannies inc. That’s what I’ll be doing later tonight! MyWeb ![]() Pac-Man Fever!November 9, 2009 on 4:41 pm by Dirk | In What we are liking | 3 CommentsNow, if you hadn’t noticed already I will freely admit to being a bit of a geek. Not quite far enough down the path that I would consider learning Klingon as a second language, but far enough that I like my Gadgets, video games and the like. This being the case when I find something that combines video games and gadgets I find it very cool, and the video below is my latest discovery. This is what you get when you take a classic game and give it a slightly Gadgety twist, combining Pac-Man with the Roomba Robot Vacuum. Alternatively, something a bit less geeky and a bit more anarchic, here is another Pac-Man related video. Although I wouldn’t recommend actually doing this as I think Monsieur Gaillard got off quite lightly being ejected from the supermarket and, rather harshly, hit with a golf club!
