![]() HelloJanuary 29, 2010 on 2:50 pm by Mandy | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postHey everyone I thought it’s about time I checked back in as it’s been a while. What with Christmas, all the snow and then my holiday, it’s been all go. Hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly. So there a just a few things I wanted to update you on, I’m going to keep it quite brief as its Friday and I’ve still got lots of catching up to do. So firstly due to popular demand we are changing out cart promo back to the handy little World Time Clock. So if you buy anything this coming week you can get this great clock for only £5.95, usual price is £8.95. I think you’ll agree that’s quite a bargin.
Talking of bargins it’s the last few days of our sale so be sure to take a look, with lots of products and some items with up to 40% off I’m sure you’ll find something. Lastly, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and we’ve been busy finding lots of different and unusual items for you to give to your loved ones. You can find them all in the dedicated Valentines section on our website here. One of my favourite Valentine’s products are the new Love bods
I’ll tell you more about them and all the other wonderful products next week. Have a great weekend! M x StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Presenting – The iPad, Apple’s latest GadgetJanuary 28, 2010 on 5:08 pm by Dirk | In News | 1 CommentSince my surprising announcement yesterday Apple have released details of the new iPad. Apparently a “revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more.” I can’t help but notice that it looks like a big iPod touch/iPhone….? I’ve read a few first impressions myself, and whilst I haven’t gone all the way through Apples own spiel about the device, the general consensus seems to be in agreement with me. Spec-wise it’s a little more impressive, packing in a faster processor, and some more memory. But it runs the same OS, it apparently has the same non-multi-tasking limitations of its smaller relatives, and so forth. Don’t get me wrong, after my rather severe red faced-ness of yesterdays post I’m not trying to rubbish the device at all. I am merely struggling to see why you should use the iPad over a netbook or a laptop? At the moment my first thoughts are that in its current incarnation it could find a nice niche somewhere. Of course going forwards improvements can, and likely will be made depending upon what Apple find people are using it for, and of course if (or should that be when?) ‘Cloud’ computing takes off, something like the iPad could be in a great position to really take advantage of that. I am in little doubt that Apple’s legion of fans will take to this latest gadget as they have done the iPod, the iPhone, Macs in general, and in fact anything that has a picture of an apple with a bite out of it on. What do you make of the iPad, do you want one, where do you see it fitting in and flourishing? StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Converted? Or Another Mindless Sheep?January 27, 2010 on 4:57 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postI sit here before you today feeling generally sheepish and somewhat hypocritical. You see as I write this blog today I am the somewhat red-faced owner of an iPhone. After 8 months or so of using my Nokia N97 I have finally given up on it. The phone itself, hardware-wise, I maintain is far superior to the iPhone. What lets the phone down is the software, and the lack of content in the Ovi Store. If you are familiar with the N97 you’ll know it has a slide button on the side which is used to lock, and unlock the screen and buttons. This simply fell off shortly before Christmas. I was going to send it away and get it repaired, but figured that as I could simply slide the screen open to unlock the keypad, and lock through the profiles menu, I would persevere. Shortly after this I updated the software, and this was where I started to have trouble. I won’t go into the details of my experience, but suffice to say I reached a point where I thought rather than having a phone that can do everything, but doesn’t do any of it very well, I could have a phone that doesn’t do as much but, largely due to Apple’s ridiculously strict guidelines before Apps can be sold via the App store, does it all smoothly and well. I have only just received my phone today, so I will be going home tonight to set it up, have a mess around and see what I can do. In fact I will give my iPhone a week before I come back and give my first impressions. Is it the polished, user friendly experience everyone raves about, or are there issues that are glossed over that could actually be better?
I guess time will tell, but now I’m off to play, and continue my Winter-een-mas celebrations! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Marvellous Monday!January 25, 2010 on 5:01 pm by Dirk | In News | Comment on this postAnother Monday and the start of another new week. This particular Monday I am quite excited. Curious as to why? Well even if you aren’t I’m going to tell you, as that is kind of the point of todays blog. Today I am excited because not only at about 7:43pm this evening will the organisers of the Download festival unveil the first 9 bands to be confirmed for the event in June (here). Today is also the first day of “Winter-een-mas” (or WEMas for short)! Now, I can just imagine all the puzzled expressions out there as possibly quite a few of you don’t know about WEMas yet. The idea for WEMas was conceived by Tim Buckley, as part of his Web comic Ctrl+Alt+Del. The idea is that this one week a year is a time to give thanks for all that is good about gaming. Predominantly aimed at Video Gaming, WEMas can also be celebrated by any sort of gaming be it indoors, outdoors, traditional board games or whatever. Of course I am a keen gamer myself, and don’t really need any encouragement to play in my free time, so I shall most certainly be observing WEMas and gaming at every given opportunity in the next week. I already have some XBox and Wii sessions planned for various nights this week, as well as a Rockband “Jam session” planned for the weekend. If you are curious about Winter-een-mas you can find some of the Ctrl+Alt+Del pages that refer to it here. I’ll leave you today by wishing you all a very merry Winter-een-mas!

MyWeb ![]() Gadget Hunters Beware!January 22, 2010 on 5:15 pm by Dirk | In What are we doing? | Comment on this postI stumbled across an article today that highlights the flaw in how a lot of us think, I know I certainly have thought this way, and one of the important “do” in the list of “Dos & Don’ts” of Gadget buying. There you are, searching online, or popping down to the shops to have a look at some new high tech Gadget for the home. Maybe it’s a new TV, Surround Sound speaker set-up, or a Blue Ray player. Whatever it may be, surely it is not unreasonable to be of the opinion, not counting sale items and the like, that the more expensive the product the better it is, and the more bells and whistles it has. Right? Wrong. The Eagle eyed folks over at Audioholics have discovered that upon opening a new $3500 Lexicon BD-30 Blue Ray Player, it is in fact a much cheaper model that has been given a cosmetic facelift and made to look different on the outside. From the detailed checks they have carried out they have shown that Lexicon have simply taken the innards out of a $500 Oppo BDP-83 Blue Ray player, re-housed them, and stuck $3000 on the price tag! Of course if you looked closely at the specifications of the two players you would see no difference, and that’s the key here. If you are going out and spending money, be it a large, or more modest amount, do some research. Don’t just wander into the shop, or click onto a website and buy the first one you see that catches your eye, or meets the price tag you can afford! Happy Gadget Hunting! Still it’s Friday, and that means the weekend! So whether you are off shopping for Gadgets, relaxing, or working have a good one and I’ll see you next week!

MyWeb ![]() Upping The Defence Levels At Gadgets Towers!January 20, 2010 on 4:53 pm by Dirk | In News, Reviews, What are we doing?, What we are liking | Comment on this postWith Mandy out of the office this week Gadgets Towers is a bit quieter than usual. Due to this, I have been concerned that with one less pair of eyes currently my stash of tea could be under greater risk than it usually is. Therefore I have been looking at some of our newer Gadgets that could be drafted in to help me defend our territory, and keep any would be invaders away from my valuable tea!
Looking through our What’s New page I was understandably drawn straight away to our new Black Hawk Picco-Z variant. After a quick rummage around I located the helicopter we had sent down to the office and set about having a test flight. It only took me a few moments to realise that I definitely needed one of these in my defence force for reconnaissance purposes. What makes this particular heli, in my view, superior to the rest of the Picco range is that it has a continual rate of forward movement, which makes it easier to navigate it to precisely where you want it. I’m sure that its LED searchlight which can be turned on/off from the remote control would come in handy! Now, the Black Hawk is great for flying around the perimeter on patrol, but your common tea taker will be undeterred simply being spotted, you need something else to back it up. I knew exactly what could perform the ‘enforcement’ role that I needed; our Wireless Roving USB Missile Launcher. The sight of this tracked tank, equipped with four high velocity missiles heading in your direction is sure to persuade anyone after my tea to think a second, and third time! This great device is controlled remotely from your PC, and has suitable range to work well in even less than modest sized offices. The tracks mean it can handle all sorts of terrain, and will turn pretty much on the spot to ensure nothing escapes! As a final line of defence, should any intrepid interlopers make it as far as my desk I also employed one of our Yoda USB Desk protectors. Instantly recognisable by sight, or the unique sound of his voice this Jedi Master is certain to divert even those who manage to circumvent my previous lines of defence! MyWeb ![]() Let It Snow!January 13, 2010 on 2:12 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing?, What we are liking | 1 CommentWell lo and behold I wake up this morning to another fresh blanket of snow everywhere! Thankfully it isn’t too bad here so the journey to Gadgets Towers wasn’t too hazardous. Mandy is off today getting some last minute essentials before she jets off skiing next week, though you have to ask if, had she known what the conditions here were going to be like, if she would have decided to go to Scotland or the Lake District instead? As I alluded to in my previous post I managed to get to the cinema to see Avatar, in 3D of course, before Christmas. James Cameron’s first film since Titanic, the expectation and hype was huge before its release, not only because of the immense budget, but also as it is the first film purposely made for the new 3D projectors in cinemas. If you haven’t been to see a 3D film for a while then I can answer the first question you want to ask which is undoubtedly that, yes, you do still need to wear 3D glasses, as without them the experience is somewhat like going to the cinema after a heavy Friday night out. Except in this instance the blurriness can’t be alleviated by closing one eye and squinting. Thankfully the glasses are no longer the incredibly cheap and nasty looking cardboard things, with one red and one green lens. Instead they now look like fairly cheap plastic sunglasses, but then since they are only to be used for watching movies in a darkened room, that isn’t so bad now is it? The 3D effect is strange, I found when watching the film that I didn’t really notice it at the time, but when seeing 2D clips afterwards there was a distinct lack of depth to the pictures, and a great deal of the grandeur was lost in translation. I think in a way that’s a good thing, it’s not the old tacky approach where you see things coming “out of the screen” at you, and the obligatory people waving their hands around trying to swat things, it merely tries to immerse you more in the story unfolding without you actually noticing too much. Of course if you are unlucky enough not to be sat within the optimum viewing area, ie right at the front or the back, then at best you’ll find the effects of the experience less immersive, and at worst you might suffer with headaches or motion sickness (although the motion sickness is my reasoning behind hearing so many stories of people being ill during these films as opposed to normal 2D showings). What did I think of the film overall? It was good. Far better than the over inflated rubbish (in my opinion) that was Titanic. Solid story, not overly clichéd and some good performances from the actual actors alongside the vast array of CGI talent on show, and I would certainly recommend it worth a watch! MyWeb ![]() 2010; the year of 3D TV?January 11, 2010 on 4:27 pm by Dirk | In News, What we are liking | Comment on this postFirst of all, as this is my first post of the year may I wish a very belated Happy New Year to everyone. Hopefully you have recovered from any excesses over the festive period, and haven’t lost your extremities to frostbite during the cold snap we’ve been experiencing!? Thankfully we’ve been coping fairly well here at Gadgets Towers, some of us struggled to make the commute when the snow first arrived, but we are now back to full strength and pushing forward. Of course at this point I tend to look forward at what 2010 will likely have in store for us, and with the CES show already in full swing, and indeed nearly fully swung, at this point the big buzz so far is from 3D TV. As you may remember from my post about CES last year, several companies were showing off some prototypes of their ‘upcoming’ 3D Televisions, and they are back this year in even greater numbers. Of course the difference this year, as I’m sure you are aware if like me have been to see Avatar in 3D, is that later in the year Sky will be launching their very own dedicated 3D TV Channel. No doubt this will be the next slightly exclusive (and no doubt expensive) service to replace HD! The consumer magazine Which have already had a look at the upcoming service and the video below shows what they thought of it.
