![]() Yay its Friday!!!!!!!February 26, 2010 on 3:39 pm by Mandy | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postIt feels like it’s been a long week here at Gadgets tower, at some points I thought Friday would never appear. It’s entirely my own fault what with watching the Olympics and taking part in the pub quiz last night I’ve had quite a few late nights. However Friday is now here with the weekend in my sights, the only thing that’s getting in my way is the box of products that’s just arrived from the warehouse. So lets see what in my box of goodies: Rose Shaped Cake Tin (for my house mates mum), batteries (for the office camera, looks like I’ll be on imaging duty next week then!), Rewind Cable tidy, M-Cups Russian Doll Style Measuring Cups, BBQ Branding Iron, Floppy Disc Style Recordable CDR (all new products that can be found on our site) and finally the V22 Vertical Takeoff Plane (to be honest I’m not sure why I’ve got that but I’m sure I’ll find out soon enough.) Well I’m off to sort through this little lot before I go home, have a great weekend and I’ll catch up with you next week. MyWeb ![]() Well You Learn Something New Every Day!February 24, 2010 on 5:19 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postHow rubbish has the weather been this week!? When it hasn’t been raining it’s been snowing, and when it can’t make up its mind it’s been doing some strange mixture of whatever it has left to throw at as! I realise it’s still Winter, but it really makes you pine for some good old sunshine doesn’t it!? Now I have recently been carrying out the not insignificant task of importing my entire music collection onto my computer so that I can carry it around with me on my iPhone. Unfortunately I have discovered today that although I own all these CDs, and indeed bought them all new, and paid full price what I am doing is actually illegal under copyright law!!! As reported by the BBC the consumer watchdog “Consumer Focus” have revealed that due to vastly out of date copyright law millions of people have been unknowingly breaking the law. This came to light when the group carried out a poll revealing that 73% of those asked were unaware that under current law it is illegal to copy media from a CD or DVD onto a computer or MP3 player for their own use. Thankfully no one is being prosecuted for this particular misdemeanour, and the point is merely being utilised to demonstrate how out of date this area of the law actually is, and thus the need to revamp it. On the plus side here we are halfway through the week, and although the weather is rubbish it’s sure to get better soon, so in the meantime here is a picture of sunnier climes to try and cheer us all up a bit!

MyWeb ![]() Rugby Day!February 10, 2010 on 10:05 am by Dirk | In News, What are we doing?, What we are liking | 1 CommentWednesday already! How the time flies here at Gadgets Towers! Mandy is off at the Spring Fair for the first half of this week, looking for loads of great new Gifts and Gadgets for us to bring you very very soon, so it’s a bit quieter than usual here. The weather appears to have taken a turn for the colder once again, so it would appear that my particular prediction was incorrect. Well, prediction was a bit of a strong word, it was more of a guess really. Of course I spent the weekend cheering on England in the 6 Nations which started last weekend. Thankfully my support seemed to do the trick as despite not playing at anywhere near our best, and some sticky moments, England ran out winners, and in truth I was so confident of the win I didn’t get anywhere near as vocal as I usually do at these sorts of events. I was going to add in a video of the match highlights here, but I can’t find a good one, so instead I will pop in a slightly more classic moment, enjoy! It’s all downhill to the weekend now, so here’s wishing everyone a wicked Wednesday! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() It’s, Groundhog Day! (Well, It Was Yesterday….)February 3, 2010 on 4:46 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postAs you may or not be aware, and I know I wasn’t until I saw posts about it on a few news sites this morning, yesterday was Groundhog Day. Yes, the festivities around which the 1993 Bill Murray film of the same name are based is an actual annual occurrence. Of course it has grown somewhat in prominence since the release of the film, but once a year people from all over flock to the town of Punxsutawney Pennsylvania to see, to give him his full name, “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary” predict when Winter will end. The Groundhog Day tradition was taken over to America by German settlers, and there are similar beliefs held by most European countries, the equivalent is found, for example, in an old English saying: If Candlemas be fair and bright, Unfortunately I didn’t pay an awful lot of attention to what the weather was like, and if there was any sunshine or shadows about yesterday, so I’m predicting that I would not have seen a shadow and we can expect Winter to be at an end very soon here at Gadgets Towers. Of course this may just be wishful thinking, and who knows how accurate this old saying is anyway? Whatever happens here, Phil certainly saw a shadow yesterday, as you can see in the video below, which means six more weeks of winter for the poor people of Punxsutawney! MyWeb ![]() HelloJanuary 29, 2010 on 2:50 pm by Mandy | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postHey everyone I thought it’s about time I checked back in as it’s been a while. What with Christmas, all the snow and then my holiday, it’s been all go. Hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly. So there a just a few things I wanted to update you on, I’m going to keep it quite brief as its Friday and I’ve still got lots of catching up to do. So firstly due to popular demand we are changing out cart promo back to the handy little World Time Clock. So if you buy anything this coming week you can get this great clock for only £5.95, usual price is £8.95. I think you’ll agree that’s quite a bargin.
Talking of bargins it’s the last few days of our sale so be sure to take a look, with lots of products and some items with up to 40% off I’m sure you’ll find something. Lastly, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and we’ve been busy finding lots of different and unusual items for you to give to your loved ones. MyWeb ![]() Converted? Or Another Mindless Sheep?January 27, 2010 on 4:57 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing? | Comment on this postI sit here before you today feeling generally sheepish and somewhat hypocritical. You see as I write this blog today I am the somewhat red-faced owner of an iPhone. After 8 months or so of using my Nokia N97 I have finally given up on it. The phone itself, hardware-wise, I maintain is far superior to the iPhone. What lets the phone down is the software, and the lack of content in the Ovi Store. If you are familiar with the N97 you’ll know it has a slide button on the side which is used to lock, and unlock the screen and buttons. This simply fell off shortly before Christmas. I was going to send it away and get it repaired, but figured that as I could simply slide the screen open to unlock the keypad, and lock through the profiles menu, I would persevere. Shortly after this I updated the software, and this was where I started to have trouble. I won’t go into the details of my experience, but suffice to say I reached a point where I thought rather than having a phone that can do everything, but doesn’t do any of it very well, I could have a phone that doesn’t do as much but, largely due to Apple’s ridiculously strict guidelines before Apps can be sold via the App store, does it all smoothly and well. I have only just received my phone today, so I will be going home tonight to set it up, have a mess around and see what I can do. In fact I will give my iPhone a week before I come back and give my first impressions. Is it the polished, user friendly experience everyone raves about, or are there issues that are glossed over that could actually be better?
I guess time will tell, but now I’m off to play, and continue my Winter-een-mas celebrations! StumbleUpon | Digg | Del.icio.us | Dzone | Newsvine | Simpy | Furl | Reddit | Yahoo! MyWeb ![]() Gadget Hunters Beware!January 22, 2010 on 5:15 pm by Dirk | In What are we doing? | Comment on this postI stumbled across an article today that highlights the flaw in how a lot of us think, I know I certainly have thought this way, and one of the important “do” in the list of “Dos & Don’ts” of Gadget buying. There you are, searching online, or popping down to the shops to have a look at some new high tech Gadget for the home. Maybe it’s a new TV, Surround Sound speaker set-up, or a Blue Ray player. Whatever it may be, surely it is not unreasonable to be of the opinion, not counting sale items and the like, that the more expensive the product the better it is, and the more bells and whistles it has. Right? Wrong. The Eagle eyed folks over at Audioholics have discovered that upon opening a new $3500 Lexicon BD-30 Blue Ray Player, it is in fact a much cheaper model that has been given a cosmetic facelift and made to look different on the outside. From the detailed checks they have carried out they have shown that Lexicon have simply taken the innards out of a $500 Oppo BDP-83 Blue Ray player, re-housed them, and stuck $3000 on the price tag! Of course if you looked closely at the specifications of the two players you would see no difference, and that’s the key here. If you are going out and spending money, be it a large, or more modest amount, do some research. Don’t just wander into the shop, or click onto a website and buy the first one you see that catches your eye, or meets the price tag you can afford! Happy Gadget Hunting! Still it’s Friday, and that means the weekend! So whether you are off shopping for Gadgets, relaxing, or working have a good one and I’ll see you next week!

MyWeb ![]() Upping The Defence Levels At Gadgets Towers!January 20, 2010 on 4:53 pm by Dirk | In News, Reviews, What are we doing?, What we are liking | Comment on this postWith Mandy out of the office this week Gadgets Towers is a bit quieter than usual. Due to this, I have been concerned that with one less pair of eyes currently my stash of tea could be under greater risk than it usually is. Therefore I have been looking at some of our newer Gadgets that could be drafted in to help me defend our territory, and keep any would be invaders away from my valuable tea!
Looking through our What’s New page I was understandably drawn straight away to our new Black Hawk Picco-Z variant. After a quick rummage around I located the helicopter we had sent down to the office and set about having a test flight. It only took me a few moments to realise that I definitely needed one of these in my defence force for reconnaissance purposes. What makes this particular heli, in my view, superior to the rest of the Picco range is that it has a continual rate of forward movement, which makes it easier to navigate it to precisely where you want it. I’m sure that its LED searchlight which can be turned on/off from the remote control would come in handy! Now, the Black Hawk is great for flying around the perimeter on patrol, but your common tea taker will be undeterred simply being spotted, you need something else to back it up. I knew exactly what could perform the ‘enforcement’ role that I needed; our Wireless Roving USB Missile Launcher. The sight of this tracked tank, equipped with four high velocity missiles heading in your direction is sure to persuade anyone after my tea to think a second, and third time! This great device is controlled remotely from your PC, and has suitable range to work well in even less than modest sized offices. The tracks mean it can handle all sorts of terrain, and will turn pretty much on the spot to ensure nothing escapes! As a final line of defence, should any intrepid interlopers make it as far as my desk I also employed one of our Yoda USB Desk protectors. Instantly recognisable by sight, or the unique sound of his voice this Jedi Master is certain to divert even those who manage to circumvent my previous lines of defence! MyWeb ![]() Let It Snow!January 13, 2010 on 2:12 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing?, What we are liking | 1 CommentWell lo and behold I wake up this morning to another fresh blanket of snow everywhere! Thankfully it isn’t too bad here so the journey to Gadgets Towers wasn’t too hazardous. Mandy is off today getting some last minute essentials before she jets off skiing next week, though you have to ask if, had she known what the conditions here were going to be like, if she would have decided to go to Scotland or the Lake District instead? As I alluded to in my previous post I managed to get to the cinema to see Avatar, in 3D of course, before Christmas. James Cameron’s first film since Titanic, the expectation and hype was huge before its release, not only because of the immense budget, but also as it is the first film purposely made for the new 3D projectors in cinemas. If you haven’t been to see a 3D film for a while then I can answer the first question you want to ask which is undoubtedly that, yes, you do still need to wear 3D glasses, as without them the experience is somewhat like going to the cinema after a heavy Friday night out. Except in this instance the blurriness can’t be alleviated by closing one eye and squinting. Thankfully the glasses are no longer the incredibly cheap and nasty looking cardboard things, with one red and one green lens. Instead they now look like fairly cheap plastic sunglasses, but then since they are only to be used for watching movies in a darkened room, that isn’t so bad now is it? The 3D effect is strange, I found when watching the film that I didn’t really notice it at the time, but when seeing 2D clips afterwards there was a distinct lack of depth to the pictures, and a great deal of the grandeur was lost in translation. I think in a way that’s a good thing, it’s not the old tacky approach where you see things coming “out of the screen” at you, and the obligatory people waving their hands around trying to swat things, it merely tries to immerse you more in the story unfolding without you actually noticing too much. Of course if you are unlucky enough not to be sat within the optimum viewing area, ie right at the front or the back, then at best you’ll find the effects of the experience less immersive, and at worst you might suffer with headaches or motion sickness (although the motion sickness is my reasoning behind hearing so many stories of people being ill during these films as opposed to normal 2D showings). What did I think of the film overall? It was good. Far better than the over inflated rubbish (in my opinion) that was Titanic. Solid story, not overly clichéd and some good performances from the actual actors alongside the vast array of CGI talent on show, and I would certainly recommend it worth a watch! The Peasants Are Revolting!December 15, 2009 on 5:27 pm by Dirk | In What are we doing?, What we are liking | Comment on this postOk, so it’s not so much the peasants in this case but the X-Factor loathing public, myself included, who are taking up arms, or in this case downloads, and campaigning against yet another dull, and boring Christmas number one. Another Christmas Number one that is a predictably manufactured re-recording, no, I wouldn’t even go so far as to say “re-imagining”, of a single that likely already has likely enjoyed some success. Yes, when it comes to RATM (Rage Against The Machine) Vs The X-Factor winner, whose name neither do I know or want to; as I feel most of the general populace will likely feel in a few months, I am firmly in the RATM camp.
As Simon Cowell suggests in various condemnations of the group wanting to send out a message by getting Rage’s 1993 single to number one for the festive week, there have been some terrible Christmas number ones. The prime example of which is Mr. Blobby. On the other hand, and this is how I feel, isn’t the Christmas number one meant to be fun? Isn’t the Christmas number one spot meant to mean something rather than being arbitrarily decided by a TV programme of the laziest kind? I will own up to buying Mr. Blobby upon its release, but will attempt to defend myself by saying I was young and knew no better. More recently I have sided with the Teletubbies in my college days and The Darkness a few years ago. I was gutted when they missed out to Mad World from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. As much as I would like to post the video below for RATM, there are some rather rude lyrics in there, so I will make do with Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) by The Darkness instead.
