From Gadgeteer, to Rocketeer!

March 11, 2010 on 4:23 pm by Dirk | In News, What we are liking | Comment on this post

Well, we’ve possibly been waiting around 45 years, ever since the iconic opening scenes from 1965’s Thunderball, but finally someone has developed a marketable personal jetpack! That’s right the folks at Martin Aircraft can produce a Personal Jetpack that, whilst maybe not affordable by everyone, can be flown by anyone, well at least once you have completed the specially developed Martin Aircraft training programme.

After nine prototypes, the price has been (almost) set at around $86,000, which is pitched as the same sort of cost as a high-end car. It will still be a while before we can use these, or something similar for our daily commutes as although Air Traffic Control are developing new systems it is not yet ready to be able to deal with jet packs flying about to Tesco and back!

Here’s a video of the Jetpack in action!

The Sweet Smell Of Success

March 1, 2010 on 2:35 pm by Dirk | In News, What we are liking | Comment on this post

Another Monday can only mean one thing; the start of another week. Whilst looking round the various blogs and news sites that I frequent to try and keep on top of everything going on in the world of Gadgets and beyond I couldn’t help but fail to stifle a giggle when I found this particular story.

Thorpe Park were asking for visitors to donate a sample of urine, the smelliest, and most repugnant of which will be incorporated into their forthcoming Saw Alive attraction. If you were at the park on Friday and submitted the winning sample, not only will it feature in the live horror maze but you’ll also win a £500 prize. Certainly not something to be sniffed at!

Thankfully Gadgets Towers has a more fragrant Lavender fragrance about it at the moment, as we are sending out a free Gelicity Lavender Foot Spa Gel every time someone orders something from our Mother’s Day category!

I’ll leave you with an amusing video that was pointed out to me, hope it helps you navigate your way through Monday!

Rugby Day!

February 10, 2010 on 10:05 am by Dirk | In News, What are we doing?, What we are liking | 1 Comment

Wednesday already! How the time flies here at Gadgets Towers! Mandy is off at the Spring Fair for the first half of this week, looking for loads of great new Gifts and Gadgets for us to bring you very very soon, so it’s a bit quieter than usual here. The weather appears to have taken a turn for the colder once again, so it would appear that my particular prediction was incorrect. Well, prediction was a bit of a strong word, it was more of a guess really.

Of course I spent the weekend cheering on England in the 6 Nations which started last weekend. Thankfully my support seemed to do the trick as despite not playing at anywhere near our best, and some sticky moments, England ran out winners, and in truth I was so confident of the win I didn’t get anywhere near as vocal as I usually do at these sorts of events. I was going to add in a video of the match highlights here, but I can’t find a good one, so instead I will pop in a slightly more classic moment, enjoy!

It’s all downhill to the weekend now, so here’s wishing everyone a wicked Wednesday!

Upping The Defence Levels At Gadgets Towers!

January 20, 2010 on 4:53 pm by Dirk | In News, Reviews, What are we doing?, What we are liking | Comment on this post

With Mandy out of the office this week Gadgets Towers is a bit quieter than usual. Due to this, I have been concerned that with one less pair of eyes currently my stash of tea could be under greater risk than it usually is. Therefore I have been looking at some of our newer Gadgets that could be drafted in to help me defend our territory, and keep any would be invaders away from my valuable tea!

Looking through our What’s New page I was understandably drawn straight away to our new Black Hawk Picco-Z variant. After a quick rummage around I located the helicopter we had sent down to the office and set about having a test flight. It only took me a few moments to realise that I definitely needed one of these in my defence force for reconnaissance purposes. What makes this particular heli, in my view, superior to the rest of the Picco range is that it has a continual rate of forward movement, which makes it easier to navigate it to precisely where you want it. I’m sure that its LED searchlight which can be turned on/off from the remote control would come in handy!

Now, the Black Hawk is great for flying around the perimeter on patrol, but your common tea taker will be undeterred simply being spotted, you need something else to back it up. I knew exactly what could perform the ‘enforcement’ role that I needed; our Wireless Roving USB Missile Launcher. The sight of this tracked tank, equipped with four high velocity missiles heading in your direction is sure to persuade anyone after my tea to think a second, and third time! This great device is controlled remotely from your PC, and has suitable range to work well in even less than modest sized offices. The tracks mean it can handle all sorts of terrain, and will turn pretty much on the spot to ensure nothing escapes!

As a final line of defence, should any intrepid interlopers make it as far as my desk I also employed one of our Yoda USB Desk protectors. Instantly recognisable by sight, or the unique sound of his voice this Jedi Master is certain to divert even those who manage to circumvent my previous lines of defence!

Let It Snow!

January 13, 2010 on 2:12 pm by Dirk | In News, What are we doing?, What we are liking | 1 Comment

Well lo and behold I wake up this morning to another fresh blanket of snow everywhere! Thankfully it isn’t too bad here so the journey to Gadgets Towers wasn’t too hazardous. Mandy is off today getting some last minute essentials before she jets off skiing next week, though you have to ask if, had she known what the conditions here were going to be like, if she would have decided to go to Scotland or the Lake District instead?

As I alluded to in my previous post I managed to get to the cinema to see Avatar, in 3D of course, before Christmas. James Cameron’s first film since Titanic, the expectation and hype was huge before its release, not only because of the immense budget, but also as it is the first film purposely made for the new 3D projectors in cinemas. If you haven’t been to see a 3D film for a while then I can answer the first question you want to ask which is undoubtedly that, yes, you do still need to wear 3D glasses, as without them the experience is somewhat like going to the cinema after a heavy Friday night out. Except in this instance the blurriness can’t be alleviated by closing one eye and squinting. Thankfully the glasses are no longer the incredibly cheap and nasty looking cardboard things, with one red and one green lens. Instead they now look like fairly cheap plastic sunglasses, but then since they are only to be used for watching movies in a darkened room, that isn’t so bad now is it?

The 3D effect is strange, I found when watching the film that I didn’t really notice it at the time, but when seeing 2D clips afterwards there was a distinct lack of depth to the pictures, and a great deal of the grandeur was lost in translation. I think in a way that’s a good thing, it’s not the old tacky approach where you see things coming “out of the screen” at you, and the obligatory people waving their hands around trying to swat things, it merely tries to immerse you more in the story unfolding without you actually noticing too much. Of course if you are unlucky enough not to be sat within the optimum viewing area, ie right at the front or the back, then at best you’ll find the effects of the experience less immersive, and at worst you might suffer with headaches or motion sickness (although the motion sickness is my reasoning behind hearing so many stories of people being ill during these films as opposed to normal 2D showings).

What did I think of the film overall? It was good. Far better than the over inflated rubbish (in my opinion) that was Titanic. Solid story, not overly clichéd and some good performances from the actual actors alongside the vast array of CGI talent on show, and I would certainly recommend it worth a watch!

2010; the year of 3D TV?

January 11, 2010 on 4:27 pm by Dirk | In News, What we are liking | Comment on this post

First of all, as this is my first post of the year may I wish a very belated Happy New Year to everyone. Hopefully you have recovered from any excesses over the festive period, and haven’t lost your extremities to frostbite during the cold snap we’ve been experiencing!? Thankfully we’ve been coping fairly well here at Gadgets Towers, some of us struggled to make the commute when the snow first arrived, but we are now back to full strength and pushing forward.

Of course at this point I tend to look forward at what 2010 will likely have in store for us, and with the CES show already in full swing, and indeed nearly fully swung, at this point the big buzz so far is from 3D TV. As you may remember from my post about CES last year, several companies were showing off some prototypes of their ‘upcoming’ 3D Televisions, and they are back this year in even greater numbers. Of course the difference this year, as I’m sure you are aware if like me have been to see Avatar in 3D, is that later in the year Sky will be launching their very own dedicated 3D TV Channel. No doubt this will be the next slightly exclusive (and no doubt expensive) service to replace HD!

The consumer magazine Which have already had a look at the upcoming service and the video below shows what they thought of it.

Revolting! Revolting! The Peasants Are Revolting!

December 15, 2009 on 5:27 pm by Dirk | In What are we doing?, What we are liking | Comment on this post

Ok, so it’s not so much the peasants in this case but the X-Factor loathing public, myself included, who are taking up arms, or in this case downloads, and campaigning against yet another dull, and boring Christmas number one. Another Christmas Number one that is a predictably manufactured re-recording, no, I wouldn’t even go so far as to say “re-imagining”, of a single that likely already has likely enjoyed some success. Yes, when it comes to RATM (Rage Against The Machine) Vs The X-Factor winner, whose name neither do I know or want to; as I feel most of the general populace will likely feel in a few months, I am firmly in the RATM camp.

As Simon Cowell suggests in various condemnations of the group wanting to send out a message by getting Rage’s 1993 single to number one for the festive week, there have been some terrible Christmas number ones. The prime example of which is Mr. Blobby. On the other hand, and this is how I feel, isn’t the Christmas number one meant to be fun? Isn’t the Christmas number one spot meant to mean something rather than being arbitrarily decided by a TV programme of the laziest kind?

I will own up to buying Mr. Blobby upon its release, but will attempt to defend myself by saying I was young and knew no better. More recently I have sided with the Teletubbies in my college days and The Darkness a few years ago. I was gutted when they missed out to Mad World from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. As much as I would like to post the video below for RATM, there are some rather rude lyrics in there, so I will make do with Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End) by The Darkness instead.

Only 17 Days Till Christmas Already!?

December 8, 2009 on 11:24 am by Dirk | In News, What we are liking | Comment on this post

Well, pretty much a third of the way through December already as it seems to fly by, I’m really not too sure where this month has gone! The orders are pouring in here at Gadgets Towers, and we’re obviously very busy here. In fact I’d go so far as to say that we are very nearly as busy as a certain jolly gentleman in a red suit and his helpers are sure to be at this time of year!

As it’s December although I haven’t yet seen the Coca Cola advert, (you know, the one with festively lit lorries and the “Holidays are coming” music) I have seen the Toys ‘R Us advert, and as such am getting into Christmas mode, which also involves watching my selection of Christmas DVDs. I’ve had discussions with both the folks here at Gadgets Towers, and my friends as to what the best Christmas movie is. Suggestions have included Elf, Scrooged, It’s A Wonderful Life, and A Muppets Christmas Carol.

For me however there is one film that stands head and shoulders above the rest. The main protagonist, or at least the actor who portrays him, has taken on and defeated aliens with advanced weaponry, robots from the future, clones of himself, international terrorists, even Satan himself, but there is no doubt that finding the sold out must have Christmas toy for his son on Christmas Eve is his most challenging task to date! Yes, I am talking about “Jingle All The Way”, the much maligned Arnold Schwarzenegger Christmas film. Arnie and his various characters are a goldmine of classic quotes, and although this film is a little light on the sound bites I still think it’s a great film. I also feel it gets across a message that, in our modern world, is possibly more valid than some of the older, more classic Christmas films. I’ve included a montage a scenes below that I managed to find below, hopefully if you aren’t quite in the Christmas spirit already this will help!

Flute Hero

November 19, 2009 on 4:51 pm by Dirk | In What we are liking | 1 Comment

Ever since the first Guitar Hero game was released waaaaaayyyyyy back in 2005 debate has raged as to whether or not there is any benefit to playing rhythm games with regards to playing real musical instruments. There seem to be three main schools of thought on this as I see it, they are:

1) Those in the “YES” camp – These are the sort of individuals who are of the opinion that because they excel at Gran Turismo, Call Of Duty or, case in point, Guitar Hero, they would also be able to cope more than adequately in the corresponding real life scenario, be it power sliding a super car around a track, or shredding a serious solo from a six-string. Yes. These people are obviously deluded.

2) Those in the “NO” camp – Exactly the opposite to those in the yes camp, and usually made up of muscisians and people who have put a lot of time, effort, and practise into learning their chosen instrument(s). They leave you under no illusion that a knowing how to strum a silly little plastic peripheral does not come anywhere close to comparing with the rock god status that is obtained with being able to have a guitar screaming in a scintillating solo. Or, even for that matter being able to nail the riff from “Smoke On The Water” in about 5 minutes from scratch without any prior musical training.

3) The moderate camp – Those who think that rhythm games have their place, are a great way of getting a few friends together and enjoying ‘playing along’ to your favourite songs in a social setting. The possible musical gains being a better sense of rhythm, (they are called ‘rhythm games after all) and in the later games where singing has been included, a better sense of whether or not you can actually carry a tune as well as you think from your sessions of singing in the shower.

Whilst I would class myself in the final group, aside from the vocal aspect, and maybe helping a beginner getting the hang of drumming, I would say that these games don’t really do much to help you musically. At least I thought that until I saw the video below. The girl in the video below wondered what would happen if she took her impressive flute playing ability and implemented it to try and play along with the lyrics to Rock Band songs.

Ok, so you do need to be a pretty serious musician to pull this off to that sort of level, but I guess it is still another argument for those in the yes camp.
