Another weekend of lovely weather, although maybe the temperatures may have been a little higher than some who were running the London Marathon would have liked, it didn’t stop Emmanuel Mutai completing the race well ahead of the chasing pack, as well as setting a new best time for the London race of 2 hours, four minutes, and thirty-nine seconds. Of course not everyone was quite so speedy, and one individual is not anticipated to finish the race until Friday the 13th of May. Lloyd Scott who has previously completed the London race in a deep sea diving suit, as a member of the Beatles in a Yellow Submarine, and the Iron Giant, will be dragging himself around the 26 mile, 385 yard course on a sled dressed as Brian The Snail of the Magic Roundabout fame. On this occasion he will be raising money for Action For Kids accompanied by Florence, Zebedee, and Dylan.

You may also have heard about the fire that occurred on Friday and has forced the closure of the M1 from junctions 1 to 4 over the weekend causing some travel difficulties. There are currently still three lanes closed northbound, with the southbound carriageway closed completely, although the highways agency are currently aiming to have some capacity restored by about 4pm today. One chap made the most of the road being closed however, and ITN cameras managed to get a snap of him, dressed in blue dressing gown and slippers, as he demonstrated some ‘Extreme Ironing’ as he got ready for work this morning.

Keep Up To Date With Our Latest Gifts And Gadgets

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

You may not have thought it, what with all our recent comings and goings to horse races, trade shows, highly involved crisp tasting, and other such activities, but being the dedicated types we are here at Gadgets.co.uk we’ve still been updating our site regularly with plenty of gadgets that are either new or, will be new very shortly. If you’ve been keeping an eye on both our What’s New, and Coming Soon sections you’ll have an idea of what is here and on the horizon, but if not I’ve had a look through and picked out a couple of my favourites from both sections for you.

In the What’s New section I’ve picked out our Personalised Retro Sweets Jar, my mouth starts watering at thought of all those cola bottles, my personal favourite! Of course if you aren’t as greedy as me this makes a great gift with the personalisation options available, and who knows, they may even share with you. Not so much of a gadget, but something that I think looks like good clean fun is the Goldfish Soap. We’ve had one of these little chaps here at Gadgets Towers for photographing, and they do look really cute, definitely bringing back memories of those trips to the fair when you were younger.

In the Coming Soon section I’ve picked out The Gyroscope, because it is really amazing. Simply set it spinning, and it will balance effortlessly on your finger. It is quite weird in fact as you think you need to move your finger to keep it balanced and upright, but it actually does that all by itself as long as it is spinning fast enough. The other item I’ve picked out in coming soon is the Lucky Voice Party Box Home Karaoke Set. Like most people I like a good sing. I also like to think that I can hold a tune, and put a vast majority of the X-Factor contestants to shame, and so I think this Karaoke set would make a great addition to any party. All you need is to have a PC, and a broadband connection ready, and the set is good to go straight from the box, giving you immediate access to over 8000 songs, which is enough to cover pretty much every base from Lady GaGa to the Beatles, going via Meatloaf and Fifty Cent.

This is just a tiny taster of what we currently have in these sections, and on our site in general. We’ll continue to keep adding even more great gift ideas and Gadgets to both sections, so make sure you keep checking back!

All The Grandeur Of The National

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Halfway through the new week already, where does the time go!?

I hope you made the most of what was a rather gloriously sunny weekend? Maybe you took the opportunity to enjoy the good weather and the great outdoors having a few friends round for an early BBQ, or maybe heading to the park for a kickabout and a lazy day in the sun?

I myself ventured up to Aintree for The Grand National, and was able to enjoy the sunshine and come back a little red. I’m not normally the betting type, so although I had a few small flutters to get into the spirit of things, my uneducated guesses were largely based on the horse’s names rather than any sort of statistics. In fact for all I knew, some of the horses I backed during the day could well have only had three legs. It’s one thing watching the race on TV, as I have done a few times, and another actually being there as the excitement is contagious, and you can’t help but stand and cheer each time the horses thunder past. Unfortunately there were some sad notes from the race, but thankfully better news yesterday as Jockey Peter Toole seemed to be doing well, and is hopefully on his way to recovery in hospital.

Yesterday Mandy was lucky enough to visit the Gadget Show Live before it opened to the public and got a look at the various gadgets on show. She has not had time to tell me an awful lot about it, but despite being sceptical she has said that she was pretty impressed with the Nintendo 3DS which was of course on show. It must be said however that she wasn’t quite so impressed once she learned of the price tag!

Our Verdict On New Walkers Crinkles

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

As Mandy mentioned in her blog on the 25th of March those lovely people at Walker’s Crisps recently sent us a couple of packs of a new flavour that will be hitting shelves in the next month or so – Walker’s Crinkles Cheddar And Onion Flavour.

We finally got around to putting this through our stringent taste test today, and we all agreed they were very tasty! Since we only had the one flavour to taste, and given the flavour we thought we’d get a bag of standard Walkers Cheese And Onion Crisps to compare them to. Upon opening the two bags the difference is immediately distinguishable in the aroma, the cheese and onion crisps smelling more of onion than anything else, but the cheddar and onion crinkles smelling noticably cheesier, but still with a subtle hint of onion lurking.

So the smell was certainly appealing but what about the taste? My initial thought upon popping a crips onto my tongue was that it tasted very much like a Quaver, but I think to describe it merely as such would be to do the crisp a disservice, as it had a much more complex flavour than just the cheesiness. Standard Cheese and Onion crisps I’ve always thought taste more of onion than anything else, with no discernable cheese taste to them, but I was very pleased that this was definitely more Cheese than onion. The cheese flavour has been enhanced, and the onion flavour diminished so that just a hint of it remains. Overall we’d definitely give these crisps a thumbs up, and look forward to this, and the other flavours in the Walkers Crinkles range being released soon.

Mugs And Tea Towels A-Plenty

Monday, April 4th, 2011

With the Royal Wedding only 25 days away the bandwagon is in full flow, with merchandise being advertised in newspapers, magazines, online, on the TV, and via pretty much any other media you would care to think of! I’m sure you’ve seen the torrent of tea towels, the motorcade of mugs, and indeed the promenade of commemorative plates, as well as very nearly anything else you could think of that you might, or indeed might not, want to have the royal couple’s faces plastered all over.

As well as the traditional items there are some slightly more ‘original’ offerings to be found if you look hard enough:

We all know those individuals who cry at weddings, but at the opposite end of the scale, particularly when it is in the public eye as much as this wedding, are those that it makes feel physically sick. If that’s you, or someone you know then why not treat them to one of these tasteful, hand printed, Royal Wedding Sick Bags? A snip at just £3 each, equipping yourself with one of these bags will ensure that you remain presentable at all times, even if you do become overwhelmed by the occasion.

If on the other hand you like a good meal to celebrate such events, then you will be pleased to hear that Dunkin’ Donuts are producing a limited edition doughnut especially for the royal wedding. The Royal Wedding Donut, as it has been imaginatively named is a heart-shaped donut filled with jam and sublimed with vanilla icing and a chocolate drizzle. Sounds very regal to me! I’ve not been able to find anything on the official Dunkin’ Donuts site however, and whether we will see it over here in the UK, we’ll have to wait and see.

Finally there is another more subtly tongue in cheek item that I stumbled across, photo below, with one rather glaring mistake. If you go to the page where they are selling the mug you will notice the small box to the lower right of the page stating: “This is a novelty piece of memorabilia featuring pictures of prince Harry and Kate Middleton above the names Will and Kate.” So it’s up to you to decide whether the error was made on purpose for a genuinely ‘novelty’ gift, or if the mistake was realised after the first batch had been created, and the company are trying to make the best of a silly mistake….?

Keeps Your Eyes Peeled….

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

The end of another week, and indeed another month, is nearly upon us, and looking at the calendar you can’t help but notice that April the 1st is looming, threatening to pull the carpet out from under you when you least expect it. I always enjoy reading the papers on April Fool’s day to see if I can spot what ingenious jokes they have managed to come up with!

Of course it isn’t always the case that the most unbelievable stories are fakes, they do say that the truth is stranger than fiction, and there have been numerous instances down the years where real news has been dismissed as an April Fool’s joke. As far back as 1946 there was the Aleutian Island earthquake tsunami, which killed 165 people in Hawaii and Alaska as they believed the Tsunami warnings to be pranks. In 1979 Iran declared April the 1st as its national republic day, and people still think this is an April Fools joke today! Not all the real stories are of a serious nature, but are so ridiculous that it is hard to believe them as fact. Stories such as the merger between rival computer software firms Square and Enix in 2003.

Looking back at the various stories it’s probably best to assume that if you aren’t sure if something you read tomorrow morning is genuine or not, it’s probably best to take it with a pinch of salt so that you aren’t labelled as an April Fool!.

Back In The Saddle

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Back in the office here at Gadgets Towers after a couple of weeks away whilst I was performing my civic duty of jury service. It varied between being incredibly interesting watching the prosecution and defence in turn presenting their evidence, and then incredibly frustrating as there was quite a lot of sitting around and waiting.

I’m sure that everyone reading this is well aware that this coming Sunday is Mothering Sunday here in the UK, I will of course be popping to visit my own mother this weekend. As I was thinking about this blog post I suddenly realised that I didn’t know anything about the history behind Mother’s Day and how it had all started. I managed to find an article here which does a good job of summing up the origins of what was likely an ancient version of Mother’s Day from Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times, and how the celebration has changed over the years to give us the day as we know it today.

There is a group of people who lump mother’s day in with valentines day, fathers day, and various other ‘Hallmark Holidays’. Pointing to the commercialisation of the event, and the loss of meaning due to this. They may have a point, but there is nothing to stop any of us celebrating Mother’s Day without the need for expensive cards or gifts. I’m sure if you asked any mother they would be perfectly happy just spending some quality time with their children, and maybe given an extra hand around the house.

Of course should you want to shower your mother with gifts then you need look no further than our Mother’s Day section. Remember that orders need to be placed by 2pm on Thursday, and Express delivery selected to ensure that your order reaches you in time!

Shower Power!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

The wind-up radio is so far without a doubt the ruler of the world of eco gadgets. Brining radio to everyone around the world without the need for costly batteries or electricty it also paved the way for other wind up gadgets such as torches, and walkie talkies. Today sees the release of what I see as being another ingenious gadget; the shower powered radio. If you are a regular watcher of Dragon’s Den you may remember this particular gadget as the inventor, Vivian Blick who incidentally worked with Trevor Baylis on the wind-up radio, appeared with the H2O radio, only to see the Dragons fail to invest. Undeterred he has gone away and managed to bring the H20 Radio to market anyway.

The Radio fixes simply to the shower hose, and is powered by the flowing water driving a micro turbine inside the radio, providing enough power for you to tune into your favourite stations and sing along in the shower, and who doesn’t like a good sing to start their morning!?

If you are of the green disposition there are many energy saving gadgets to be found in our Eco section, including some ingenious wind up items, but not any water powered ones… just yet

What Can You Do For Mum This Mother’s Day…?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

As you may have noticed, our Mother’s Day section is now live on our site, and filled with a vast array of great gift idea’s for the most special lady in all our lives! There are a few weeks to go until April the 3rd for you to make sure you’re fully prepared, but we don’t think that we can ever be ready early enough, or do enough for our mums every Mother’s Day.

It can be difficult to understand just how much our mum’s do for us, even if we don’t realise it. I think that the only real way to know what a mum does, or goes through on behalf of all of their children is to be a mother yourself. They have a bond closer, and more unconditional than anyone else ever will. It doesn’t matter what any of us do, mum will always be there for us, and Mother’s Day is the one day a year that we can really show that we appreciate what they do for us. Mother’s Day can be seen as an inconvenience, another day aside from Birthdays and Christmas when we have to buy presents and cards, but we don’t. In fact Mum’s tend to ask very little of their children, but the least we can do is show our mum that we care, that we appreciate what they do for us, and that we love them as unconditionally as they love us.

I heard this song a long time ago, but I think it perfectly sums up some of things that mothers do for us all, without us even thinking about it. This Mother’s Day make sure you make your mum feel truly special.
