If you’ve been out to Tokyo recently you may have noticed something out of the ordinary amongst the normal rows of skyscrapers in the skyline, because for the 30th anniversary of the Gundam series, and to help promote the Japanese bid for the 2016 Olympics, the company who owns the rights commissioned the creation of a 1:1 scale replica of one of the gigantic mobile robotic weapon suits.
Completed in early June the statue is made from fibre-glass reinforced plastic over a steel frame, measures about 59 feet (17.9 metres) tall, and weighs around 35 tonnes. It will be open to public viewing from July 11th to 31st August in Shiokaze Park in Southeast Central Tokyo. As you can see from the photo’s below it looks really impressive when lit up at night. More photo’s can be seen here via Pink Tentacle.
