I sit here before you today feeling generally sheepish and somewhat hypocritical. You see as I write this blog today I am the somewhat red-faced owner of an iPhone. After 8 months or so of using my Nokia N97 I have finally given up on it. The phone itself, hardware-wise, I maintain is far superior to the iPhone. What lets the phone down is the software, and the lack of content in the Ovi Store.

If you are familiar with the N97 you’ll know it has a slide button on the side which is used to lock, and unlock the screen and buttons. This simply fell off shortly before Christmas. I was going to send it away and get it repaired, but figured that as I could simply slide the screen open to unlock the keypad, and lock through the profiles menu, I would persevere. Shortly after this I updated the software, and this was where I started to have trouble. I won’t go into the details of my experience, but suffice to say I reached a point where I thought rather than having a phone that can do everything, but doesn’t do any of it very well, I could have a phone that doesn’t do as much but, largely due to Apple’s ridiculously strict guidelines before Apps can be sold via the App store, does it all smoothly and well.

I have only just received my phone today, so I will be going home tonight to set it up, have a mess around and see what I can do. In fact I will give my iPhone a week before I come back and give my first impressions. Is it the polished, user friendly experience everyone raves about, or are there issues that are glossed over that could actually be better?

I guess time will tell, but now I’m off to play, and continue my Winter-een-mas celebrations!
