Evolutionary Robots

With Terminator Salvation due for release in UK cinemas this week I feared the worst when I saw this post entitled “Robots with fins, tails demonstrate evolution”. The thought of evolving robots automatically conjured up images of multi-limbed self-aware mechanoids equipped with various implements designed for drastic ‘population control’ was pretty much immediately at the forefront of my mind, after all, elementary Chaos Theory hypothesises it is merely a matter of time before this does happen!
Thankfully rather than talking about robots that are able to actually evolve themselves, the robots in question are being used by scientists to study evolution by actually demonstrating how different ‘mutations’ could be more or less beneficial to long extinct creatures. Why not simply use computer programs to simulate this you may well ask, and the Professor leading this particular project, John Long, says – “The thing about robots is, robots can’t violate the laws of physics, a computer program can.”
My apprehension regarding any upcoming robot apocalypse having been assuaged for the moment I shall go back to looking forward to the next Terminator instalment, the trailer is below for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.
