Since my surprising announcement yesterday Apple have released details of the new iPad.

Apparently a “revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending email, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games, reading e-books and much more.” I can’t help but notice that it looks like a big iPod touch/iPhone….?

I’ve read a few first impressions myself, and whilst I haven’t gone all the way through Apples own spiel about the device, the general consensus seems to be in agreement with me. Spec-wise it’s a little more impressive, packing in a faster processor, and some more memory. But it runs the same OS, it apparently has the same non-multi-tasking limitations of its smaller relatives, and so forth. Don’t get me wrong, after my rather severe red faced-ness of yesterdays post I’m not trying to rubbish the device at all. I am merely struggling to see why you should use the iPad over a netbook or a laptop?

At the moment my first thoughts are that in its current incarnation it could find a nice niche somewhere. Of course going forwards improvements can, and likely will be made depending upon what Apple find people are using it for, and of course if (or should that be when?) ‘Cloud’ computing takes off, something like the iPad could be in a great position to really take advantage of that.

I am in little doubt that Apple’s legion of fans will take to this latest gadget as they have done the iPod, the iPhone, Macs in general, and in fact anything that has a picture of an apple with a bite out of it on.

What do you make of the iPad, do you want one, where do you see it fitting in and flourishing?
