The Gyroscope is one of those things that looks incredibly simple, a few metal rings stuck together, but trying to understand how it does what it does is another matter entirely. At first glance it may seem quite dull, but this little gadget spinning at a high speed and you can get it to perform some pretty nifty tricks!

Gyroscopes are used in all manner of everyday, and not so everyday, items from keeping remote control helicopters and UAVs steady and controlled, to helping ICBMs and space shuttles navigate, you might even have a gyroscope in your phone!

First you need to get the Gyroscope started, and spinning pretty fast, you can do this easily by using the starting string included. Once you've got it spinning you can very easily get the Gyroscope to balance on pretty much anything. Balance it on a pencil, a pen, a nail, or just the pedestal included and watch as it sits there spinning, and defying gravity. If you balance the Gyroscope on the end of your finger it's a really weird sensation as it just spins without falling or you needing to move your finger and adjust position as you would think you should need to.

If these tricks aren't daredevil enough then how about getting your Gyroscope to balance on a tightrope suspended above crocodile infested waters? Again, once it is spinning fast enough the Gyroscope will easily sit on a piece of string, but if it is dangling above crocodile infested water make sure you rescue it before it slows down too much!
